Do “Cold” Mattresses Actually Help You Sleep Better? (Yes… and No)

You’ve probably seen those cool-to-the-touch mattress ads promising relief to hot sleepers. As someone who was curious, I bought one and gave it a try. The first few hours were bliss and they felt amazing. But then in the middle of the night, waking up occasionally and felt like I'm sleeping on the basement floor.


So... do cold mattresses really help your sleep?

The answer is a bit messy: yes for some people, in certain conditions. And no for others, or under certain circumstances.

Many users complain of overcooling.

Browsing Reddit, plenty of folks describe their new cool-feeling mattress as too cold to sleep on comfortably:

A few users have commented that while cooling surfaces do wick moisture, it sometimes feels strange or too airy unlike the “snug warmth” of traditional mattresses.


Culturally and historically, our instinct is often to avoid the cold more than to chase coolness. That means many of us are more sensitive to a mattress that feels cold than one that’s a bit warm.


Practical tips and a balanced take


Consider smart cooling pads and pay attention to your sleep climate as a whole: room temperature, humidity, ventilation, covers, sleepwear.
